Ryanair's passenger cabin crew, represented by the Sictpla and USO unions, have registered this Wednesday a strike notice in the 13 bases in which Ryanair operates in Spain for the days 1, 2, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 28 of September, according to a statement.
"The reason for this strike is to prevent the closure of the bases of Gran Canaria, Tenerife South and Girona, if in the latter case what was announced by the airline is confirmed, as well as the dismissals that would derive from that closure in the personnel directly hired by Ryanair and that which is still illegally in the satellite agencies", said Manuel Lodeiro, spokesman for SITCPLA.
"In the coming days we will receive the summons from the SIMA for mediation and, if there is no agreement, the strike will be formally called", said Jairo Gonzalo, Secretary of Organization of USO-Ryanair. "We very much doubt Ryanair's willingness to reach an agreement, or even to present itself with a negotiating spirit. More than a year of meetings in Spanish official bodies with an attitude of mockery towards them does not give us the slightest hope of understanding", he indicated however.
The spokesman for SITCPLA has stated that the strike is called "due to a forceful threat, expressed not only at the table, but personally at the bases of Gran Canaria and Tenerife". "But the general problems with this company are not due to this isolated event, but to a process of repeated breaches that has led to the most drastic decision that a workforce can take in defense of their jobs", he added.
The unions conclude by pointing out that they hope that "the Ministry of Development will not annul their capacity to strike again and will not decree, as last year, minimum services so abusive that they did not even allow stoppages".
