The rate of population below the poverty line in Lanzarote stood at 15.69%, while the percentage of households in this same situation reached 17.22%, according to the latest available data, from the year 2025, collected in the Survey of Income and Living Conditions in Canary Households by ISTAC and provided by the Lanzarote Data Center.

In the Canary Islands as a whole, poverty, whose threshold for this study is set at 797 euros per month, affected 17.55% of the population and 19.32% of households. Thus, Lanzarote presents a somewhat more favorable diagnosis than the regional average, being 1.86 percentage points below in population and 2.1 percentage points below in the number of vulnerable households.

Historical evolution shows that Lanzarote registered significantly lower figures at the beginning of the century than both its current level and the regional average. In 2001, poverty in Lanzarote affected 9.4% of the population and 10.4% of households, compared to 18.6% of the population and 20.7% of households registered in the Canary Islands as a whole.

When comparing Lanzarote with the rest of the islands in 2025, the island ranks as the second Canary territory with the lowest percentage of population at risk of poverty (15.69%), surpassed only by Fuerteventura (14.88%). Both eastern islands are positioned well below the regional average (17.55%), as well as Tenerife (17.52%) and Gran Canaria (17.68%). Likewise, they are notably distant from the high percentages of the western islands, such as La Gomera (19.89%), La Palma (21.98%), and El Hierro (28.07%).

Lanzarote's historic low in 2004

The historic low for Lanzarote was reached in the year 2004, when poverty fell to 8.6% in the population and 8.4% in households (compared to 18.7% and 20.8% for the Canary Islands, respectively). However, after the financial crisis and during the following years, the island's indicators began a gradual deterioration: in 2007, population poverty rose to 14.3% (18.8% in the Canary Islands) and in 2013 it reached 15.6% (22.6% in the Canary Islands).

Thus, between 2004 and 2025, Lanzarote has gone from 8.6% to 15.69% (+7.09 percentage points), followed by Fuerteventura, which rose from 10.7% to 14.88% (+4.18 points), and La Gomera, which increased from 16.5% to 19.89% (+3.39 points). The rest of the islands registered decreases in their rates, with La Palma standing out with the largest reduction, falling from 24.9% to 21.98% (-2.92 points), Gran Canaria from 19.9% to 17.68% (-2.22 points), and Tenerife from 19.1% to 17.52% (-1.58 points), while El Hierro maintained very high figures with an almost imperceptible variation, going from 28.8% to 28.07% (-0.73 points).

The upward trend continued in 2018, reaching 18.41% in the population and 17.87% in households (20.66% and 20.64% in the Canary Islands). This rebound culminated in 2022 with the highest figures in the recent series for Lanzarote: 19.89% of the population and 19.26% of households were below the poverty threshold of 680 euros, approaching the regional average for that year (20.54% of the population and 21.17% of households).

Between 2022 and 2025, there has been a notable recovery after overcoming the pandemic. During this three-year period, population poverty in Lanzarote decreased by 4.2 percentage points (from 19.89% to 15.69%), while in the entire archipelago the reduction was 2.99 points (from 20.54% to 17.55%). Regarding households, Lanzarote decreased by 2.04 points (from 19.26% to 17.22%) compared to the 1.85-point reduction recorded in the Canary Islands (from 21.17% to 19.32%).
