Studying new luminescent materials with applications in photonics, energy, and anti-counterfeiting security systems is the objective of the TENET research project, led by the University of La Laguna (ULL) and selected in the call for applied R&D project grants promoted by the Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture (CUCIC), through the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI).
The project focuses on the development and study of luminescent materials that incorporate rare-earth ions, whose properties offer new possibilities for technological applications related to nanotechnology, photonics, and renewable energies.
These materials can exhibit specific optical properties that allow for the exploration of new solutions for capturing and transforming energy, developing photonic technologies, and creating identification and protection systems against counterfeiting. This is a multidisciplinary research field with potential application in strategic technological and energy sectors.
In the energy field, TENET will contribute to the search for solutions linked to decarbonization and the development of low-emission technologies, including applications related to solar fuels and green hydrogen. The project also contemplates the use of low-cost infrared radiation to improve certain energy conversion and utilization processes.
The initiative is part of the objective to strengthen collaboration between R&D&I centers and companies, fostering the development of technological innovation projects capable of improving the competitiveness and technological differential of the productive fabric.
Due to its orientation, TENET contributes to the objectives of the Strategy for Smart and Sustainable Specialization of the Canary Islands (expanded RIS3), especially in areas related to green growth, sustainability, and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The proposal obtained a score of 74.8 points in the scientific and technical evaluation of the call and will have funding of 137,495 euros. The project is classified as an Industrial Research Project (PII).
The initiative is part of the 17 projects financed in the latest regional call for applied R&D, endowed with more than 2.5 million euros, and has co-financing from the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the framework of the ERDF Canarias 2021-2027 Program.
