Ecovidrio, the company that manages the selective collection of glass packaging from the source, has announced the results of glass packaging recycling in the Canary Islands in 2025.
In the past fiscal year, Canary Islanders deposited more than 47,800 tons of glass containers in the island's green bins, which represents a 3% decrease compared to the previous year, marked by a contraction in the consumption of single-use glass containers of around 2%, which directly impacts the volume of waste generated and, subsequently, recovered.
Specifically, during 2025, each Canarian deposited 21.3 kg of glass in the green container, which is equivalent to about 73 containers per person; thus placing itself above the national average (20 kg and 68 containers per inhabitant). This means that, in the entire archipelago, a total of 164 million containers were deposited, which is equivalent to more than 448 thousand containers per day and more than 300 containers every minute.
By islands, Lanzarote led citizen contribution to the green bin, with 43.9 Kg/inhab, followed by Fuerteventura (35.9 Kg/inhab), La Palma (20.8 Kg/inhab), La Gomera (19.7 Kg/inhab), Gran Canaria (18.9 Kg/inhab), El Hierro (18.5 Kg/inhab) and Tenerife (17.6 Kg/inhab). The impact of the level of tourists in Lanzarote or Fuerteventura with respect to its population must also be taken into account.
By provincial capitals, the performance of Santa Cruz de Tenerife stands out, which increased the collection of glass packaging by 8.2% and has reached, for the first time, 2,600 tons of glass packaging deposited in green containers. On the other hand, among the municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants in the Canary Islands, Tías (118.5 Kg/inhab), Yaiza (115.5 Kg/inhab), and Mogán (91.9 Kg/inhab) led the citizen contribution to the green container within the archipelago, which also provides clues about the impact of tourism on recycling figures.
The emissions avoided by recycled glass in the Canary Islands are equivalent to those of 13,500 cars in one year
Glass is a material 100% recyclable infinitely and without loss of quality, which makes the separate collection system for glass packaging the most effective, efficient, and environmentally sustainable model. Thanks to glass recycling in the Canary Islands during 2025, it has been possible to avoid the emission of more than 29,200 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, the equivalent of the emissions of more than 13,500 cars removed from circulation for one year.
It has also been possible to save more than 36,000 MWh of energy, the equivalent of about two months of energy consumption in all the hospitals of the Canary Islands archipelago.
Likewise, the extraction of more than 60,400 tons of raw materials was avoided, which is equivalent to almost six times the weight of the Eiffel Tower.
