Last year, Lanzarote lost population for the first time since 2014, after eight consecutive years of increase, according to figures published by the Lanzarote Data Center.
In the total calculation of the island, the decrease in 2022 was only 77 inhabitants, but it was very significant in the capital, which lost 747 inhabitants, going from 64,497 citizens in 2021 to only 63,750 last year.
The population also decreased in San Bartolomé, which lost 69 inhabitants in 2022 compared to the previous year, and currently has 18,989 citizens, and in Yaiza, where 53 fewer inhabitants were counted, so its population by right is now 16,924 people.
The sharp drop experienced in Arrecife has been offset by population increases in the rest of the municipalities. The municipality where the population increased the most was Teguise, which in 2022 added 367 inhabitants to a total of 23,044 citizens.
Next is Tías, which added 282 inhabitants, bringing the total to 21,083 citizens.
The population of Tinajo increased by 126 people to a total of 6,573 inhabitants.
In Haría, 17 more inhabitants were counted, which increased the population to 5,382 citizens.
