The Cabildo of Lanzarote has registered a new increase in the use of regular public transport on the island during the first semester of this year, with a total of 4,021,606 travelers counted between January and June 2025. This figure represents an increase of 8.47% compared to the same period of the previous year, in which 3.7 million users were reached.
The President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, considers that these data "demonstrate the direct impact of the measures implemented by this Corporation to promote a more efficient mobility model, inclusive and sustainable".
“The increase in the fleet of buses or the increase in schedules, are actions that have made public transport respond better and better to the needs of citizens, which is why more people choose it as an alternative to private vehicles,” he explained.
Of the total number of travelers counted so far this year, 65% do so through some form of bonus, while the rest pay for their journey directly, either with cash or by bank card. It should be noted that, since the implementation of the card payment system in February 2024, this option already represents 14% of direct payments without bonus.
For his part, the Minister of Transport, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, also highlighted the increase in the number of residents who have joined the Canarian Resident Bonus. “Since the end of 2024 until June of this year we have experienced a 13% increase in its issuance, reaching 32,991 beneficiaries on the island, which confirms the growing interest in more economical and sustainable transport formulas.”
Jimenes pointed out that this growth in demand with bonus will mean a significant economic effort for the island administration, with a forecast of disbursement that will be around 10 million euros by the end of 2025. “A commitment that we assume with responsibility, because we understand public transport as a right and as a central axis for the social and territorial cohesion of Lanzarote,” he added.
Both officials agreed that among the key factors of growth are the technological improvement of the system, the modernization of the fleet with more efficient vehicles, the restructuring of lines and the creation of new itineraries adapted to the reality of the population.
