The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) will study how the lunar cycle influences plankton communities in the subtropical ocean and what implications this phenomenon has for ecological processes and the carbon cycle in the ocean.
The IMPULSO project has been selected in the call for applied R&D project grants promoted by the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture (CUCIC), through the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI).
Although open-sea plankton changes rapidly, there is a lack of high-resolution time series to measure this variability. However, previous evidence indicates that various marine surface organisms adapt their patterns to the Moon cycle. IMPULSO will delve into this relationship to better understand the functioning of marine ecosystems and their capacity to mitigate climate change.
Due to its orientation, IMPULSO is integrated into the priority area of the Blue Economy Industry, fostering knowledge, scientific infrastructure, and technological services to support sectors linked to the Blue Economy, in line with the objectives of the Canary Islands Smart and Sustainable Specialization Strategy (RIS3 extended).
The proposal obtained a score of 79.81 points in the scientific and technical evaluation of the call and will have funding of 357,035.46 euros to develop an experimental development project.
The initiative is part of the 17 projects financed in the latest regional call for applied R&D, endowed with more than 2.5 million euros, and has co-financing from the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the framework of the ERDF Canary Islands Program 2021-2027.
