How big is the only Roman settlement in the Canary Islands, located eight kilometers from Lanzarote, really?

That is the question that the tenth excavation campaign of the Roman purple workshop of Lobos seeks to answer, now underway, and which will last until November 15.

The tenth excavation campaign in 'Lobos I', which runs until November 15, aims to define the extent of the site within the framework of the research project: "Towards the definition of the islands," the Cabildo de Fuerteventura reported in a statement this Monday.

This new campaign involves researchers, archaeologists, biologists, and specialists in different fields, belonging to the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and Museums of Tenerife, as well as collaborating members and friends of the archaeological museums of Fuerteventura and Tenerife.

The objective of these works is to define the extent of the Lobos I site, consisting of a purple dye workshop, towards the southern area of Playa de La Calera.

To this end, two soundings are planned in different places. One near the workshop, and at the foot of the small volcanic cone that is associated with it, and another to the southwest, near the coastline.

These areas could articulate a different space, always complementary to the workshop, associating one of them with a possible activity related to daily life and another with fishing activities.

The time and effort of the archaeological work will provide the diagnosis that is sought, according to the Councilor for Historical Heritage, Rayco León, in one of the most important places in the history of archeology in the Canary Islands.

The direction of the works lies with the director of the Archaeological Museum of Fuerteventura, Isidoro Hernández, and the technician and curator in Archeology of the Archaeological Museum of Tenerife and the professor of Prehistory, Carmen del Arco, and has been authorized by the General Directorate of Culture and Cultural Heritage of the Canary Islands.

In addition, Binter collaborates, covering the costs of the team's transfer and transportation of materials, the note states.
