The Canary Islands budget project for 2025 includes a reduction of the IGIC on sports services from 7 to 3% to "encourage health care", as announced this Tuesday by the Minister of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, Poli Suárez.

The Minister announced this tax reduction at the presentation of the ExpoDeca program, the physical activity and sports fair that will be held for the first time on the weekend of November 14 to 17 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, pointing out that, with measures like this, his department "recognizes the work of the sports sector, an industry that has not been as well attended as it deserved".

This tax reduction measure will specifically benefit personal training and/or physical preparation services, gyms, crossfit rooms, pilates, yoga or similar.

As highlighted by Education, this will position the archipelago as the region in all of Spain with the lowest tax rate in relation to sports services, so this measure can be used, the Minister has asserted, to "encourage health care" of the island population.

In addition, he recalled that sports practice "has a direct impact on prevention and, as a consequence, on health savings".

According to data provided by the Ministry in a statement, the sports sector in the Canary Islands currently employs about 20,000 people, of which about half belong to key groups such as young people or women; and its activity is deployed around 2,431 companies that are active.

In a context of salary increases and supply costs, especially electricity, this measure also represents an incentive for companies in the sector to make new investments, improve facilities, create new centers and, as a result, increase both the supply and the quality of sports services available to citizens, the note indicates.

The reduction of the IGIC for sports services, Education has highlighted, "responds to the commitment of the Ministry to achieve a healthier and more active Canary Islands, with a sports industry capable of adapting to the new challenges and demands of society, contributing more and more to their physical well-being".
