Fred. Olsen Express reinforces its commitment to the conservation of biodiversity in the Canary Islands with the activation of its shearwater protection campaign during the 2025 season.

After launching this initiative in 2024, in Agaete, the shipping company expands the measures both in dates and in ports to protect this emblematic species of the archipelago.

This year, the measure is applied in all the islands, including, in addition to the ship that spends the night in Agaete, those that stay overnight in Los Cristianos, Valle Gran Rey, Playa Santiago, San Sebastián de La Gomera, Morro Jable and Corralejo, in Fuerteventura, Playa Blanca in Lanzarote, La Estaca in El Hierro and Santa Cruz de La Palma.

The campaign is being developed from the night of September 27 and will continue until the night of November 15.

Its main objective is to reduce the artificial lighting of the ships to the minimum indispensable during night operations and stays in port, thus avoiding glare and disorientation of the shearwater chicks, which, sometimes, during their first trip to the sea, causes their accidental fall.

The early start of the campaign will also protect adult specimens during this period.

Each ship will incorporate customized configurations of its light panels, following the attenuation protocol defined by Fred. Olsen Express as part of its Safety Management System (SMS).

With this initiative, the company reaffirms its commitment to the conservation of the marine environment and the fauna of the Canary Islands, combining the maritime transport operation with the protection of endangered species and their natural environment.
