Lanzarote's fish production suffered a huge decrease last year compared to the previous year, according to the Lanzarote Data Center based on the first sale fishing statistics of the responsible Ministry.
The 1,266 tons of fish and seafood produced in 2023 on the island represent 33.7% less than what was recorded in 2022, when production amounted to 1,913 tons.
The decrease also led to a significant drop in the sector's profits. If in 2022 the total value of the captured product amounted to 6.2 million euros, last year it remained at 4.6 million, which represents a decrease of 25.5%.
Among the myriad of fishing techniques used on the island, the most used technique is hand line or manual rod, with bait and fishing line, and it is in this modality where the fall has been most noticeable.
This technique was used to capture 1,300 tons in 2022, more than the entire production of last year. In 2023, much less was captured with this modality, 552 tons.
