More than sixty groups and organizations from the Canary Islands, including the main unions, have joined a campaign to boycott the distribution and consumption of potatoes from Israel in the archipelago, launched this Thursday under the slogan "With mojo yes, with blood, no".

The Lanzarote potatoes from Los Valles are known for their extraordinary quality, but they sell out quickly. Most of the tubers distributed in Lanzarote come from abroad. Potatoes from Israel arrive mainly in winter, also those from Cyprus. In autumn they usually arrive from Scotland and Denmark, while in summer they arrive mainly from England.

The initiative aims to protest against the occupation of Palestine and the thousands of civilian deaths caused by Israel's military campaign in response to the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023, while expressing its support for local production.

The promoters of this campaign (BDS Tenerife, Plataforma Tenerife con Palestina, Sanitarios con Palestina and Asamblea Estudiantil Gara) have called on the entire Canarian society not to collaborate with the financing of what they describe as "genocide of the Palestinian people", nor with the "war crimes" that they attribute to the State of Israel.

"We would love to end this campaign by declaring the Canary Islands free of Israeli potatoes," said Vanesa Quedi, from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel organization of Tenerife (BDSTenerife), at a press conference, who stated that the objective is to add the large supermarket chains to this boycott and to renounce the distribution of products that are grown in occupied Palestinian territories.

"We make a call to Canarian society in general and to companies in the sector in particular to renounce the consumption and distribution of potatoes imported from the Zionist State of Israel, responsible for the atrocious genocide of the Palestinian people, before which we as a society must react," he emphasized.

This campaign also seeks to "bet on the Canarian countryside", food sovereignty and defend "the agricultural, environmental and humanly healthy practices of our farmers".

Among the 67 organizations that currently support this boycott are the groups in defense of the Palestinian people from all the islands, environmental groups such as Ecologistas en Acción and the unions CCOO, UGT, Intersindical Canaria, STEC, Federación Sindical Canaria, Cobas, Sindicato Obrero de Canarias or CNT.
