The handbag designer based in Lanzarote, Angie Vásquez, and eight other designers and firms from the Canary Islands will showcase their talent and the creative diversity of the Canary Islands at one of Spain's major international fashion events, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) in Madrid, on September 17.

This participation represents a strategic opportunity, promoted by Proexca, to showcase the Canarian sector to one of the main European markets and consolidate the archipelago's positioning as a territory for fashion creation and production.

This was highlighted by its president, Alfonso Cabello, in a working session prior to the fashion show, directed by Rubén Goméz and Pepe Trapiello of Pelonio, which was attended by the brands Aurelia Gil, Viperinas, Alex Menorca, Marco y María, Chacho SVNRS, Angie Vásquez, Roselinde, BAN Artesanía Cuero, and Diazar.

The CEO of Proexca, Pablo Martín Carbajal, also attended this session, where the concept of the show and its scenography were presented to facilitate the selection of looks for the fashion show.

For Cabello, participating in MBFW "is an extraordinary opportunity that confirms the work we have been doing in the fashion sector in recent years, in collaboration with all the island councils, to address Canarian fashion with unity and from an industrial perspective that favors the internationalization of its professionals and companies."

The presence in Madrid, he added, represents "a coming-out for our fashion" with a proposal that seeks to showcase the richness of the different islands and a unique creative identity.

"The Canary Islands had to be there, and this platform allows us to make a difference not only in what we do, but also in our accent, in a creative identity that is built from many perspectives and that has enormous potential in the islands, already representing around 3% of the Canary Islands' GDP and generating activity, employment, and professional opportunities," he explained.

Fashion that breaks clichés

The Canarian participation in BMFW presents an opportunity for its organizers to claim the diversity of creation from the islands and overcome the traditional association of the Canary Islands exclusively with swimwear, summer, or tourism, in order to showcase a much broader ecosystem.

The creative director of the project, Rubén Gómez, emphasizes that it is about "showing Spain and the world what is happening in the Canary Islands' creative scene," a movement that transcends fashion and also connects with disciplines such as music and other artistic expressions.

The selection of designers allows for the construction of a common narrative around the quality of design, " which exists on each of the islands and to show fashion based on good craftsmanship, on pattern and on exquisiteness, but also on trends, on urban fashion and on nightlife and festive fashion," he explained.

This diversity responds to a creative scene that has been consolidating on the islands and which finds in its own roots one of its main tools for differentiation. The Canary identity, far from functioning as a limitation, thus becomes an element of value for internationalization.

The presence at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid also represents a meeting point with professionals, buyers, media, and industry agents, and opens up new possibilities for collaboration and positioning for the participating firms.
