The CSIF union has filed a complaint with the Labor and Social Security Inspectorate for health risk due to extreme thermal stress in the inspection filters of Lanzarote airport, where skin symptoms are being detected among passengers.
CSIF considers the situation in the passenger security filters to be of extreme health and environmental seriousness. The problem is reportedly caused by the failure or absence of adequate air conditioning systems at the airport, with the consequent risk of thermal stress for both workers and users.
The union points out that the temperatures recorded in the inspection areas exceed those established by current regulations for workplaces, which seriously compromises the health of security staff and passengers.
According to CSIF, a large number of passengers are being detected in a state of extreme sweating, as well as visible skin conditions, including blisters caused by the heat.
For CSIF, under these circumstances of critically high temperature and humidity, mandatory physical inspections —pat-downs— and the handling of belongings become "especially arduous and risky, due to contact with bodily fluids such as sweat and possible accidental contact with blisters".
The union recalls that the thermal conditions of workplaces must comply with Royal Decree 486/1997, on minimum safety and health provisions in workplaces, and considers that the temperatures being recorded could contravene said regulations.
In the complaint filed with the ITSS, CSIF reiterates the problems related to the functioning of the air conditioning and demands the adoption of immediate measures to guarantee adequate temperature and safety conditions.
Likewise, for ergonomic reasons, the union demands the immediate replacement of all chairs classified as being in poor condition in filters T1, the north barrier, and the CCTV area, with operational, adjustable, and ergonomic models.
Finally, CSIF denounces the lack of cleaning in the passenger check-in area, in filters T1 and T2, as well as in the areas designated for workers' rest and breaks.
