The Council of Ministers has approved in its session this Tuesday the Royal Decree by which the direct granting of subsidies is contemplated to finance metropolitan collective public transport in different regions, including the Canary Islands, for the year 2026.
In this way, the State will transfer 47.5 million euros in subsidies to the Government of the Canary Islands to finance the gratuity of collective transport in the archipelago during the 2026 fiscal year, an amount that is the same as that already approved at the time for the previous year, as specified by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility in a statement.
In addition to transport in the Canary Islands, the Royal Decree also grants funds to finance the Regional Transport Consortium of Madrid, the Metropolitan Transport Authority of Barcelona, and the Metropolitan Transport Authority of Valencia.
"The regular passenger transport in these metropolitan or island areas is characterized by a significant volume of affected population, high intensity of travel, the participation of several administrations in its management, and the impact of its operation on general economic activity and various sectors," the Ministry highlighted in its note.
This department recalls that public transport is an essential public service due to its "notable" impact on how life unfolds in these territories, but also on economic, professional, or social activities.
"Meeting the mobility needs of a significant volume of the population justifies this funding, which contributes to the ordinary functioning of this essential public service," the Ministry concluded.
From the moment this Royal Decree comes into effect, beneficiaries will have a period of ten business days to submit their applications and the rest of the required documentation, and the resolution of the granting of these aids will have a maximum period of 45 days.
