Cement sales have fallen again in May after the peak recorded the previous month, with 4,136.3 tons, a figure that had not been recorded in the fifth month of the year since 2016, according to the report of the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.
In previous years, cement sales marked much higher figures, with 6,050 tons in May 2019, 7,121.4 in 2020 or 6,545.7 in 2021, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 37% compared to this year. The only immediately previous lower figure was six years ago, when only 3,402.5 tons of cement were sold.
In addition, it is important to note that the figure also decreased by 19% compared to April (5,077.4), although this was the best month of 2022.
As a result of these decreases, the accumulated figure for 2022 is also lower than the previous year, with a total of 22,396 tons, compared to 38,098 in 2021, which represents a decrease of 41%.
Cement also falls in the Canary Islands
In the archipelago, cement sales have also decreased by about 8,000 tons in just one month, from 54,038 in April to 46,512 in May.
However, if we take into account the numbers prior to the pandemic, the figure for 2022 is even better, since in May 2019, 46,367 tons were recorded, 145 less than this year.
Finally, regarding the total accumulated to date, this also falls, since in 2022, 247,280 tons of cement have been sold, compared to 318,728 in 2021, 22% less.
