In May, cement sales in Lanzarote increased by more than 8% compared to the previous month, reaching 4,271 tons. The year-on-year increase is a rise of 3.2%.
The data contrasts with that of April when the total amounted to 3,951 tons and represented a sharp drop of 27.5% compared to the previous month and 22.17% compared to the previous year.
Since the peak of March 2021, when 8,590 tons were recorded, a decreasing trend began, falling to records below 4,000 tons per month.
Cement sales, an important indicator of the dynamism of the construction sector on the island, experienced large falls since records soared in the first year of the pandemic.
The monthly growth rate was 72% in May 2020. During the pandemic period, the absence of tourists led to increased construction and renovation activity.
The increase in Lanzarote has also been reflected in the Canary Islands as a whole, which has been very close to reaching 50,000 tons, when in April it had been just over 48,000.
