Sales of passenger cars and SUVs in the Canary Islands decreased by 6.4% in February and the accumulated figure for the year experienced an increase of 0.5%, reaching 12,784 units, according to the employers' association.

As for the national calculation, sales increased by 4.9% in February, while so far this year, the used market has increased by 10.9%, standing at 320,732 units.

Analyzing the sales channel, this increase is mainly due to the growth of operations with used vehicles from vehicle rental fleets.

Specifically, these operators increased their sales of used vehicles by 36.1%, reaching 14,393 units in February. So far this year, they have accumulated an increase of almost 40%, concentrating around 9% of the total market.

This increase in operations with used vehicles from fleets largely explains why almost one in three operations in February involved a passenger car between zero and five years old, which is 7% more than in the same month of the previous year.

Most of the cars were more than 15 years old

However, the data provided by the employers' associations show how the bulk of operations continues to be concentrated in models over 15 years old, which accounted for 40% of sales at the end of last month, two points more than in February 2023.

Regarding energy sources, operations with used diesel vehicles - which represented 55.9% of operations - accumulated an increase of 7.3% until February. Gasoline vehicles, on the other hand, increased by 9.7% during the past month, with a total of 119,044 units sold so far this year.

For their part, operations with pure electric used cars continue to rise, with an increase of 65% until February and a total of 2,621 units sold, which represents 0.9% of the total market compared to 0.6% last year.

In their case, sales of used plug-in hybrids increased by 56%, accounting for a total of 3,878 units so far this year.
