The Government of Canary Islands will subject 78 service stations spread across the entire archipelago to an inspection process to clarify the causes of the "unison" price increase among different operators immediately after the outbreak of the war in Iran.
The vice president and counselor of Economy, Manuel Domínguez, has explained that this is the main reason that has motivated the regional executive to take this second step, that of inspection, which could open the door to a third scenario, that of escalating the file to Competition and the possibility of imposing sanctions.
The inspection will consist of the formal request for documentation from those service stations to know if consumer rights were respected and how the price formation structure was between January 1 and May 25, with a key date: February 28, the first attack on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The objective of this measure, Domínguez affirmed, "is clear": if the Competition requirements have been met and if the price increase "has been in accordance with market circumstances or if there has been another effect that we are not aware of and we have to take sides".
