The call for grants for applied R&D projects promoted by the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture (CUCIC), through the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI), will allow the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) to develop the Innovative MAnagement for conGested Energy Communities (iMAGEC) project, aimed at improving the management of energy communities in the face of the new challenges of the transition towards a more efficient energy system based on renewable sources.
The decarbonization objectives of the energy system require advancing towards greater use of renewable energies and more efficient management of available resources. In this context, the iMAGEC project proposes new solutions to address the growing complexity of energy communities and contribute to their integration into the energy system.
The initiative aligns with the Canary Islands Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3 extended), by responding to the cross-cutting priorities of Sustainability and Digitalization, considered fundamental pillars for driving the transformation of the Archipelago's energy model.
The project also presents a significant socioeconomic impact for the Canary Islands by placing citizens and local businesses at the center of the energy transition. In the social sphere, the initiative can contribute to fostering greater user participation in energy management, while in the economic sphere, it can generate new opportunities linked to innovation and the development of advanced solutions for energy communities.
The subsidy granted to the ULPGC amounts to 182,836.25 euros and the project obtained a score of 77.83 points in the scientific and technical evaluation of the call.
The initiative is part of the 17 projects financed in the latest regional call for applied R&D, endowed with more than 2.5 million euros, and is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the framework of the ERDF Canary Islands Program 2021-2027.
