The Deputy Minister of the Primary Sector, Eduardo García, and the Director General of Fisheries, Esteban Reyes Hernández of the Government of the Canary Islands, held this Wednesday, April 15, a series of meetings with the Secretary General of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), Isabel Artime, and the Director General of Sustainable Fisheries, Ramón de la Figuera, together with a broad representation of the fishing sector, among which are the three federations of fishermen's guilds of the Canary Islands, as well as producer organizations.

Among other topics of interest for the islands' fishing sector, the orientation of the next EU financial framework with regard to fishing in the outermost regions, the problematic generational replacement in the sector, the management plans for pots, the availability of fishing capacity with regard to the Canarian artisanal fleet, as well as the imminent modification of Royal Decree 46/2019, of February 8, which regulates the fishery of bluefin tuna in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean, have been addressed.

Regarding this last matter, the Deputy Minister of the Primary Sector has reiterated “the need to offer special consideration to the red tuna fishery in the Canary Islands, through the allocation of additional quota for incidental red tuna catch and the establishment of a flexibility mechanism that allows the interannual transfer of the quota of this tuna species that is not consumed by the Canarian fleet”.
