The call for aid for applied R&D projects, promoted by the Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands and managed by the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI), will promote research to improve women's brain health during perimenopause and menopause.
The project by the University of La Laguna (ULL), endowed with 214,856 euros, will develop new preventive strategies based on natural bioactive compounds with the aim of protecting brain function at this stage of life.
In Spain, around 13 million women are going through perimenopause or menopause and, according to available data, nearly 60% experience neurological alterations such as memory loss, concentration difficulties, emotional changes, or the well-known 'brain fog'. These manifestations can significantly affect their quality of life and, however, remain an area with significant research needs.
To address this challenge, the scientific team will apply a multidisciplinary methodology that will combine clinical trials in women with studies in animal models and advanced techniques. This approach will allow for a comprehensive analysis of the biological mechanisms involved and the evaluation of the effect of new nutraceutical formulations (bioactive compounds of food origin on brain health).
The results will contribute to expanding scientific knowledge about the changes associated with this stage of life and could open the door to the development of preventive and personalized solutions that promote healthier aging.
With this research, the Canary Islands continue to strengthen their commitment to applied R&D projects that generate high-value knowledge, promote innovation in the biosanitary field, and offer responses to challenges with a significant social and health impact.
The study is part of the 17 projects selected in this regional call for applied R&D, endowed with more than 2.5 million euros, and is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the framework of the ERDF Canary Islands Program 2021-2027.
