A total of 3,966 young people have benefited from additional discounts on inter-island transport since the Government of the Canary Islands signed the Youth Mobility Pact with the main airlines and shipping companies operating in the archipelago in November last year.
As agreed at the time, the companies adhering to the pact would offer an additional 10% discount, compatible with the 75% applied for residency, to all users of the European Youth Card program in the Canary Islands, which depends on the General Directorate of Youth and the IDEO Canary Youth Foundation.
The General Director of Youth, Daniel Morales, explains that "mobility is a handicap for young people to access training, employment, and of course also leisure, even more so in a fragmented territory like ours." "Facilitating mobility is something that all the surveys pointed out by young people in the Canary Islands, and we wanted to respond to it."
Daniel Morales also highlights the great advantages that users of the European Youth Card have and emphasizes the exponential increase it has had since the beginning of the legislature, while the number of associated companies increases." Currently, the European Youth Card program has 55,612 young people, which represents an increase of 146% since the beginning of the legislature in July 2023.
According to the first data from these months, the company Iberia has delivered 3,091 discount codes, BINTER has already applied it to 586 young people, Naviera Armas to 311 and NORTOUR to 8. The discounts are applied to young people from 12 to 30 years old who have the European youth card, which is free and can be obtained on the website carnejovencanarias.com.
The airlines and shipping companies that have established the agreement to date are: Iberia, Binter, Armas Trasmediterránea, Líneas Romero and Naviera Nortour. The agreement is open to new incorporations of air, maritime and land companies, and discounts are accessed through the respective websites of the airlines and shipping companies.
