The Association for Rural and Fisheries Development of Lanzarote (Aderlan) has been selected as a collaborating entity of the Government of the Canary Islands for the management of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) 2014-2020. The total amount that it will manage for the island amounts to 962,194 euros.
The Participatory Local Development Strategy prepared by Aderlan has been the most valued within the set of strategies presented by the rest of the local action groups of the Canary Islands. Aderlan works as a local action group managing the funds of the European Union destined to the development of the rural environment of the island of Lanzarote since 1996.
The Leader approach
These funds must be managed under the Leader approach, which consists of transferring the planning initiative to the local communities of each rural territory, which are organized in local action groups or public-private associations with assembly operation. These develop and implement a development strategy for said territory, taking advantage of its resources.
This bottom-up approach implies a challenge of social revitalization to achieve greater involvement of the population in solving the common problems that affect them and a greater commitment in the actions they project, and should translate into an increase in local governance.
