The Lanzarote Tourism Federation has presented the lines of action of its Sustainability Strategy, aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the actions for the decarbonization of tourism companies on the island.
The presentation took place at the Arrecife Gran Hotel, within the framework of the III Conference on Tourism Sustainability, entitled 'Climate Change and Energy Transition in the Tourism Sector', which was organized by the CIDE Tourism of ASOLAN center, belonging to the Canary Islands Network of Business Innovation and Development Centers promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands.
During the event, the challenges of the tourism sector in the face of climate change and the need for an energy transition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions were discussed, within the framework of the European Union, the United Nations and the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition of the Canary Islands, and to achieve climate neutrality in 2040.
The Minister of Industry and Energy of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Ariagona González, highlighted the importance of these conferences to share the challenges and achieve together the objectives set by the European Union, the State and in particular the Government of the Canary Islands, to achieve climate neutrality in 2040, for which public-private collaboration is essential.
Advice and subsidies for companies
From the CIDE Turismo ASOLAN, its technician Iago Suau, has informed about the services offered to companies in the sector, such as advice in projects of innovation, sustainability, digitalization, as well as information on aid, subsidies and financing allowing companies to improve their competitiveness.
Gonzalo Piernavieja, director of R&D&I of the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC) has presented the Energy Transition Plan of the Canary Islands, within the framework of the recently approved Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition, and the requirements and implications for the tourism sector.
The Director of the UAP of European Funds of the Ministry of Tourism, José Mª Cabrera Domínguez and the Manager of the Official College of Industrial Engineers of the Canary Islands (COIICO), Rubén Pérez, have reported on the public subsidies for the implementation of energy efficiency projects in tourist establishments, both accommodation and non-accommodation (hotel and restaurant companies, travel agencies, complementary leisure, active tourism, etc.).
The conference ended with the presentation of two success stories of the Cide Network in sustainability of Lanzarote, Club La Santa and Arrecife Gran Hotel, both establishments that were also recognized by the CaixaBank Hotels&Tourism Awards of the Canary Islands.
