The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, urged citizens this Wednesday to "take extreme precautions" in the face of the increase in infections in the archipelago, as well as due to the new South African variant in the vicinity of the Christmas holidays.

For this, he said, the Canarian Executive has also made decisions such as re-implementing the request for the 'Covid certificate' at the archipelago's airports to all national passengers landing on the islands, since with international passengers he pointed out that it was being done through Foreign Health.

To this, he added in statements to journalists after the inauguration of a symposium on civil aviation, that he intends to add the request for the 'Covid certificate' in various spaces on the islands, a question that they have already requested from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC), and are waiting to know its ruling, although Torres hopes that "it will be favorable."

In relation to this, he stated that the Supreme Court (TS) has validated the request for the 'Covid certificate' in the Basque Country, which "is good news" because it has indicated that the request for this document "the only thing it provides is more health security, it implements that people get vaccinated, which is the most intelligent thing, and no individual right is avoided, on the contrary" puts "health security on the table and the more the better."

In relation to the restrictions for this Christmas, he pointed out that the Governing Council that the Canarian Executive will hold this Thursday on the island of Lanzarote will analyze the data, pointing out that "the increase in levels is mathematical", although the Ministry of Health evaluates and corrects what the indicators are.

Thus, he has clarified that currently in the Canary Islands "there is not" "at this time significant hospital pressure" but he has warned of the need to "take care of all the measures" because he warned that if it is necessary to "make any decision, they will make it due to the circumstances of Covid" and they do not want to affect the economy after the "serious, competent and rigorous" work that the archipelago has done to control Covid.
