The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has asked the population this Thursday for "responsibility" in the celebration of the 'New Year's Eve' holiday because, given the sharp increase in coronavirus infections, "going out at night is not an option".

"Let's not gamble away our health or our economy for three days. If we have done well during all this time since March 14, 2020, let's not spoil it in the Christmas of 2021," he said at a press conference held in La Palma in which he launched an express message to people between 20 and 39 years old, who accumulate accumulated incidence rates above 1,100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants due to the lower vaccination rate and greater social interaction.

The president has admitted that the moment is "worrying" and the Canary Islands "need to enter strongly in 2022" once the volcanic eruption in La Palma has stopped and all efforts can be focused on the reactivation of the economy.

In that line, he said that people can "have fun, be responsible and do it with distance" and hopes that the security operations organized by the different administrations will work "as little as possible" and there will be no "altercations."

Regarding the request for a curfew submitted to the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) for the islands in level 2 and 3 on the nights of December 31 and January 1 and 5, he commented that the resolution will arrive this afternoon or on the morning of this Friday. "We are optimistic that they will give us the go-ahead," he said.
