The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, is confident that the "forceful" report sent to the Supreme Court will allow the curfew on the Islands with level 3 or 4, and hopes that a response can be obtained throughout this week.
In a press conference, Ángel Víctor Torres revealed that he has spoken with other regional presidents who have presented similar proposals and are "optimistic" about the Supreme Court's ruling.
Torres regretted that this appeal had to be filed after the TSJC's order despite the Prosecutor's Office's "forceful" report, which is a "judgment of legality and also represents popular sentiment."
He stressed that the curfew is "one of the few tools" currently available to stop infections and assured that it is "valid and works" because it "prevents nighttime crowds, especially on weekends and among the young population."
The president assured that he does not "demonize" young people, but made it clear that at the moment they are the ones suffering the most infections, especially those under 20 years of age and even those under 10.
Therefore, he encouraged them to get vaccinated and collaborate with the trackers and give the names of their close contacts when they test positive for COVID-19, especially because there are vaccinated people who are entering hospitals again.
Regarding the next Governing Council and the possibility that Tenerife could rise to level 4, Ángel Víctor Torres admitted that there are measures in the alert levels that without a curfew "are less effective." Therefore, he believes that alternative measures should be sought, such as vaccination or screenings.
Torres warned that there are two "difficult and complicated" weeks left to reach herd immunity in August and "focus on the future months, which are key for the Canary Islands."
