The Canary Islands Federation (FECAI) today presented in the Parliament of the Canary Islands the Bill to Amend the Law on Island Councils, an initiative whose objective is to adapt the law to the Statute of Autonomy approved in November 2018, strengthen the competential autonomy of the councils and simplify bureaucracy and regulations to achieve more effective, efficient and citizen-friendly management.
The session took place in the Cabildos Room of the Parliament and was attended by the Speaker of the House, Astrid Pérez, the spokespersons of the parliamentary groups and representatives of the seven island councils, headed by the President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Dolores Alicia García Martínez, representing the FECAI.
"The reform of the Law of Cabildos must guarantee autonomy, efficiency and proximity to the citizens, as demanded by our Statute of Autonomy. This Parliament is open to listen and work together with the island corporations to move towards a more agile and transparent model," said Astrid Pérez.
The councils fully have the transferred powers
The members of the FECAI stressed the importance of the councils fully having the transferred powers, in accordance with the Statute of Autonomy, and advocated a simplified and transparent management, which allows to offer better public services and greater legal certainty.
The President of the Parliament thanked the FECAI "for its work in promoting this legal reform necessary to update the role of the councils in the autonomous framework" and reiterated the Chamber's commitment to "institutional dialogue to strengthen territorial cohesion and equality between the islands".
