The Parliament of the Canary Islands hosted this Wednesday the Conference on Lung Cancer in the Canary Islands, organized by the Canary Islands Lung Cancer Foundation (FCCP) under the slogan "Challenges in addressing lung cancer in the Canary Islands: prevention, diagnosis, treatment, support and patient voice. A look from the health and social reality."
The meeting, held in the Europa Room, brought together healthcare professionals, patients, institutional representatives, experts in diagnosis and treatment, managers in the healthcare field, and members of the pharmaceutical sector, with the aim of comprehensively analyzing the situation of lung cancer in the Archipelago.
During the day, key topics were addressed, such as the evolution of the disease, the importance of early diagnosis, the gender perspective, the humanization of care, and the need to offer comprehensive care that listens to the patient's voice.

Lung cancer is currently the third most diagnosed tumor in Spain, with a growing trend among women, especially in the Canary Islands, where the highest rate of female mortality attributed to tobacco is recorded. In 2024, more than a thousand people lost their lives on the islands due to this disease, which represents 21.6% of all cancer deaths in the autonomous community.
The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, closed the meeting with a message of commitment and hope, emphasizing the importance of joining forces to fight this disease. "Lung cancer represents one of the greatest challenges not only for the Canary Islands but for the entire health system of Spain," Pérez said during her speech.

Likewise, the president highlighted the essential role of prevention and early diagnosis: "We know that a solid screening program using CT scans could reduce mortality in our community by up to 20%. That's why investing in early detection is investing in life," she said.
The Canary Islands Lung Cancer Foundation (FCCP) is a private, non-profit organization established in 2021 that works to promote cancer research and training, support patients and families, raise awareness in society, and actively fight against smoking.
