The Government of the Canary Islands has declared three days of official mourning in the Autonomous Community for the death of former President Lorenzo Olarte Cullen. From today until next Tuesday, the flags of all public centers dependent on the Autonomous Community will fly at half-mast.

Lorenzo Olarte, President of the Canary Islands (1988-1991) and Vice President of the Autonomous Government (1987-1988 and 1995-1999) passed away this Saturday at the age of 91. Born on December 8, 1932, he was also President of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria between the end of the Franco regime and the Transition (1974-1979) and served as a deputy for several years in both the Congress and the Parliament of the Canary Islands.

The declaration of three days of official mourning by the Government of the Canary Islands was already adopted on October 10, 2010, after the death of former President Adán Martín. The Autonomous Community also declared three days of mourning after the death of former President Jerónimo Saavedra on November 21.

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, will attend the arrival of the coffin at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Government of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria this Saturday at 12:00 noon, where Lorenzo Olarte will be watched over and will directly convey his condolences to family and friends. The funeral chapel will be open to the public from 4:30 p.m. this Saturday.
