Izquierda Unida Canaria, in coalition with Sumar, has launched a call to the Government of Spain and the European Union to assume its historical and legal responsibility as the administering power of Western Sahara. Through this position, Sumar-IUC urges the Spanish executive to stop being an accomplice to Morocco's illegal occupation and to actively support the Saharawi people's right to self-determination.
Manu Pineda, candidate of Izquierda Unida on the Sumar list for the European Parliament, expressed his concern about the lack of effective action by Spain: "As the former colonizing power of Western Sahara, Spain has an unavoidable responsibility that it cannot ignore. It is imperative that the Spanish Government recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and work actively to ensure that Morocco complies with international agreements and United Nations resolutions."
The situation in Western Sahara remains one of the world's most prolonged and forgotten territorial disputes. Despite clear UN resolutions stipulating a referendum for the self-determination of the Saharawi people, efforts for a peaceful solution have been continuously hampered by the Moroccan occupation, with the tacit complicity of international actors, including Spain.
Luisa Tamayo, National Coordinator of IUC, stated: "We cannot continue to allow the fundamental rights of the Saharawi people to be trampled on. Spain must lead in the defense of international legality and respect for human rights in Western Sahara. Spain's passivity in this matter is not only immoral, but also contradicts its own international commitments."
Sumar-IUC emphasizes that the conflict in Western Sahara is not only a vestige of colonialism, but a matter of human rights and international justice that directly affects the stability and security in the Maghreb region.
"The Saharawi people deserve to live in peace, in a territory that belongs to them by right. The international community, and especially Spain, must act to put an end to the repression, exploitation and violation of human rights suffered by the Saharawis under Moroccan occupation," added Tamayo.
IUC and SUMAR are committed to bringing this issue to the heart of Europe, ensuring that Western Sahara is a priority on the political and diplomatic agenda of the European Union. Manu Pineda concluded: "In the European Parliament, I will fight tirelessly to ensure that the will of the Saharawi people is respected and that Europe adopts a firm and coherent position that favors peace and justice in Western Sahara."
Sumar-IUC will continue to mobilize support and awareness about the Saharawi cause, urging citizens and authorities to recognize the seriousness of the conflict and the urgent need for a just and permanent resolution.
