Education suspends in-person classes on four Canary Islands due to 'storm Claudia'

The Ministry advances this decision after analyzing the risks associated with this storm and recommends suspending complementary and extracurricular activities

The Minister of Education, Poli Suárez, this Tuesday in the Parliament of the Canary Islands.

The Government of Canary Islands has suspended face-to-face classes for this Wednesday in La Palma from 1:30 PM and in Tenerife, El Hierro, and La Gomera, from 3:00 PM.

Through its account on the social network X, the Ministry of Education has announced this decision after analyzing the risks associated with this storm, which will first affect the western islands, with winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour, possible storms, and rains that could reach 100 liters of water per square meter in twelve hours.

Education also recommends that schools suspend complementary and extracurricular activities

The storm Claudia is moving from west to east, so it is expected that throughout Wednesday afternoon/evening and Thursday morning it will also begin to affect Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa

No decision has yet been made regarding school activities on these four islands in the province of Las Palmas.

Education will examine its situation on Wednesday, at 11:00 AM, and will decide based on the most up-to-date forecasts on the storm's evolution

The Canary Islands Government will place all islands on alert for rain, flood risk, and wind, on a staggered basis, starting tomorrow.

 

Alert in Lanzarote from 6:00 AM

The alert begins at 3:00 PM in La Palma, at 6:00 PM in El Hierro, La Gomera, and Tenerife; at 12:00 AM on Thursday in Gran Canaria, and at 6:00 AM on Thursday in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

According to the forecasts it is handling, a cold front, associated with storm Claudia, will cross the archipelago from west to east, reaching La Palma before noon on Wednesday the 12th and leaving Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the afternoon of Thursday the 13th. 

"As it passes, there will be moderate and persistent rainfall, with probable heavy or very heavy downpours on the islands with higher elevations, especially on the west and south slopes," adds the General Directorate of Emergencies of the autonomous community.

Locally heavy downpours in Lanzarote are not ruled out, as well as in Fuerteventura, and rainfall is expected to exceed 20-30 liters per square meter in one hour and more than 80-100 l/m2 in twelve hours in the islands with higher terrain.

In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the rains can leave up to 15 liters per square meter in one hour.

The State Meteorological Agency has also issued risk warnings: for Wednesday, orange (significant risk) in La Palma and the south, east, and west of Tenerife, and yellow (risk) in El Hierro, La Gomera, and the north of Tenerife; and for Thursday, orange for La Palma, the south, east, and west of Tenerife, and the south, east, and west of Gran Canaria, and yellow for the rest of the autonomous community's territory.
