The National Geographic Institute has registered a new earthquake in the Canary Islands that has been felt by the local population. On this occasion, it occurred between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, closer to the capital island.
It is a seismic event of intensity 3.9 on the Ritcher local magnitude scale. The epicenter of the tremor was specifically registered east of Gran Canaria, off the coast of Telde, at a depth of sixteen kilometers.
On this occasion, the earthquake occurred around 2:30 AM, Canary local time. In total, it was felt in forty locations on Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, specifically in nine municipalities on Gran Canaria and three on Fuerteventura.
On both islands, intensities two and three have been recorded, according to the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS), which places this seismic event in the lower intensities of the scale, which ranges from zero to twelve. In these cases, the earth movement has no effect on the population; it is only detected by individuals at rest, in some buildings, and by hanging objects that may sway slightly.
In this same area, another earthquake had been registered early Monday morning, with a magnitude of 2.3 on the Ritcher scale and a depth of eleven kilometers, which was not felt by the population.
