The General Directorate of Coasts and Management of the Canary Maritime Space of the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands has commissioned the public company Cartográfica de Canarias S.A., Grafcan, for technical assistance in the development of a resource that allows the collection of information on the Canary Islands coastline.
The assignment includes the maintenance of the current Geographic Information System, called the Canary Islands Coastal Piloting Tool (HPL), and its development through the implementation of new content for its execution during 2024, for a total amount of 121,150 euros.
Antonio Acosta highlighted the importance of this contract to guarantee the correct development of functions of the autonomous community after assuming the powers of Coasts. "The planning and management of the coastline requires an exhaustive knowledge of our coast, which must be accompanied by a balance between its protection and preservation," he stressed.
In this sense, the general director stated that with this assignment "we ensure that Grafcan covers the most deficient aspects of the existing information and organizes the different activities so that they are sustainable and coordinated with each other."
Royal Decree 713/2022, of August 30, on the transfer of functions and services to the autonomous community of the Canary Islands in matters of coastal planning and management, requires knowledge of the marine environment that must be generated and completed for the correct development of functions by the Canary Islands Executive.
The tasks entrusted include technical monitoring, the setting of criteria and planning for the digital incorporation of cartographic data, and technical assistance for the incorporation of data prepared by the Coastal Planning Service in the HPL, the delineation on cartography prepared by the company Grafcan, and the incorporation of data provided by other Administrations for the management of the beaches.
