The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has stated that the tourism business community has understood that a transfer of income must occur to improve the working conditions of workers, and has denied that with this position the Government is fueling, as Vox accused him, labor conflicts in the sector.

Clavijo, in response to the spokesperson for the Vox group, Nicasio Galván, said that the Government's obligation is not to defend the interests of businessmen but the general interest of citizens and therefore, he continued, he has defended the transfer of income between a sector "that is doing very well, and the population that was getting worse and worse."

For that reason, he added, the Government has mediated in the labor conflicts of the sector and an improvement of the agreement has been achieved in the province of Las Palmas, and it is almost achieved in that of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, he said.

In his opinion, in the Canary Islands the "tourism-phobia" is scarce because the population is aware of the economic importance of the sector, but it is about making the increase in wealth and the improvement of working conditions compatible.

The parliamentary spokesperson for Vox, Nicasio Galván, has warned of the influence that factors such as labor conflicts, or tourist taxes, can have on the choice of the Canary Islands as a tourist destination.

As an example, he cited the alert from the British Foreign Office about the effects of the strike on Thursday and Friday of Holy Week, and accused Clavijo of not being firm in the defense of the sector.

In addition, Galván pointed out that in March there was a decrease of four percent in overnight stays, a figure that he considered very dangerous if it marks a trend.
