The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, admitted this Monday that the regional Executive is studying the possibility of 'forcing' officials from certain bodies of the regional Administration to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, in relation to those who interact with sensitive groups.
Torres has stated that the green certificate, which has already come into operation on the island of Tenerife as it is at risk level 4 due to Covid-19, "obliges anyone going to a space that has risk", such as interior areas, to be vaccinated, although he has clarified that "citizens cannot be forced to be vaccinated".
However, he considered "different" the case of "officials from different bodies", pointing out that the Government of the Canary Islands "is studying that possibility".
For Torres, denial "is a danger to the person themselves and a danger to the community", which he pointed out "is unfair" because "responsible people" cannot "pay" the consequences of those who do not want to be vaccinated.
Bend the curve
On the other hand, the president of the Canary Islands has advanced, according to the data from the draft on the incidence of Covid in the archipelago, that the figures for this Monday "are very similar" to those of a week ago, pointing out that if this occurs in the coming days, it could go towards what the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has already advanced, and that is that it is beginning "to bend the curve", although he was "very cautious" about it.
"I hope that Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, we can have numbers that we start to say with four, three days, that we start to bend the curve", he added.
Likewise, he referred to the ruling of the Supreme Court (TS) on the possibility of implementing a 'curfew' in the municipalities of the Canary Islands with the highest incidence of Covid-19 between 00.30 and 06.00 hours, pointing out that after the report of the Prosecutor's Office of the TS endorsed it, he hopes that the judges "decide, take into account and their ruling is favorable to what the Prosecutor's Office of the TS transfers", because he has defended that it is an "effective" measure.
Regarding the legality of the green certificate, Torres has warned that the Canary Islands is risking "August, yes, but" also "September, October, November, December and also the winter market", which he highlighted is when the most employment is generated.
Therefore, he hopes that "there are no lawsuits, that there is common sense", because "nobody likes to take restrictions" but, he said, it must be done when the "accumulated incidence increases, when there are more positives and when there are problems in hospitals".
Finally, and before the objective of having 70 percent of the target population in the Canary Islands vaccinated this summer, he pointed out that almost 60 percent of Canarians already have a double vaccination schedule and "this is also key to bending the curve".
