The daily all-cause mortality monitoring system (MoMo) estimates that in the Canary Islands 89 people have died during the summer period, starting from May 15, due to high temperatures, compared to 129 in the same period in 2025.
The period of highest mortality due to heat in the Canary Islands has been, to date, the one between August 1 and 16.
In Spain as a whole, 2,147 deaths have been identified from the same cause in August alone, and the cumulative figure for the year to date rises to 5,232, the highest since records began.
The figures for what have so far been the two deadliest summers since 2015, when the MoMo historical series began, have thus been surpassed. MoMo does not quantify actual deaths but makes a statistical projection by cross-referencing data on maximum temperature thresholds and deaths from civil registries and those that occurred in other years: that of 2022, when 4,789 were recorded, and that of 2023 (3,035).
However, the figures have not yet reached those of the historic summer of 2003, when about 13,000 people lost their lives in Spain as a consequence of high temperatures, which led to the design and implementation of a plan to prevent the effects of heat on health by the Ministry of Health.
This plan is activated every year on May 15; in 2026, from that date until this Monday, MoMo estimates a total of 5,232 deaths.
July closed with 2,025 deaths compared to 1,060 in 2025, making it the second deadliest month since 2022, when 2,217 were recorded.
Meanwhile, and pending definitive data (which take about a week to consolidate), August 2026 registers 2,147 this Monday, a number similar to last year's, which is currently the deadliest since 2015 with 2,172.
The vast majority of deaths this summer, as in all summers, occur in those over 65 years of age (5,048), especially in those over 85, who account for 62% of the total with 3,256.
Likewise, women, with 60% of the total, are the most affected.
