Canary Islands led marital breakdowns between July and September

The lowest rates of marital breakdowns in the analyzed period corresponded to the Basque Country (32.1), Castilla-León (33.6) and Madrid (35.0)

Between July and September of this year, the Canary Islands recorded an average of 49.7 marital breakdowns per 100,00 inhabitants, the highest rate in the national territory. According to data from the Statistics Service of the General Council of the Judiciary this Wednesday, the national average was 39.6, that is, 10.1 points lower than that of the Islands.

According to the report released this December 11, between July and September 2024, the civil courts of the Archipelago recorded a total of 1,116 lawsuits for separations, divorces or marriage annulments, 2.7% less than in the third quarter of 2023 (1,147). The lowest rates of marital breakdowns in the analyzed period corresponded to the Basque Country (32.1), Castilla-León (33.6) and Madrid (35.0).

Regarding the national scope, the total number of lawsuits for marital dissolution - annulments, separations and divorces - filed in the third quarter of this year decreased by 1.4% compared to the same quarter of 2023, according to data collected by the Statistics Service of the General Council of the Judiciary. Between July 1 and September 30, all types of lawsuits decreased, as did those for annulment.

In the analyzed period, 7,463 lawsuits for non-consensual divorce were filed, which is 0.8% less than a year ago. Similarly, the 186 lawsuits for non-consensual separation represented 17% less than those of the third quarter of 2023. Regarding consensual lawsuits, those for consensual divorce (11,189) decreased by 1% and those for consensual separation (474) decreased by 13%.

In the months of July, August and September of this year, 12 lawsuits for annulment were filed, compared to 14 in the third quarter of 2023, 14.3 percent less. Relating the lawsuits for marital dissolution to the population as of January 1, 2024, it can be observed how the national average stood at 39.6 lawsuits per 100,000 inhabitants. Above the national average were the Canary Islands, with 49.7; the Valencian Community, with 44.1; La Rioja, with 43; the Balearic Islands, with 42.8; Andalusia, with 42.5; Castilla-La Mancha, with 40.4; Murcia, with 40.2 and Galicia, with 39.8. Below the national average were the Basque Country, with 32.1; Castilla y León, with 33.6; the Community of Madrid, with 35; Extremadura, with 36.1; Cantabria, with 36.5; Aragon, with 36.6; Asturias, with 37.2; Navarra, with 38.7 and Catalonia, with 39.

 

Non-consensual separations

Procedures for modification of measures in separation and divorce proceedings and custody and alimony of non-marital children. The lawsuits for modification of consensual measures filed in the third quarter of the year decreased by 4.3% reaching a total of 2,582; the lawsuits for modification of non-consensual measures, which totaled 6,468, had a year-on-year variation of -1.1%.

The modifications of measures of custody and alimony of non-marital children (4,681) experienced a year-on-year increase of 0.4 percent, while the non-consensual ones, which were 5,685, decreased by 0.7% compared to the previous year.
