The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has signed this Monday afternoon a Decree declaring three days of official mourning in the Autonomous Community for the death of His Holiness Pope Francis
As stated in the document, the president speaks for the general sentiment of the citizens of the Canary Islands on the occasion of this sensitive loss and as a sign of condolence.
In this sense, and in correspondence with the declaration of national mourning, it will be in effect in the Canary Islands from 00:00 hours on Tuesday, April 22 to 24:00 hours on Thursday, April 24.
As Fernando Clavijo stated throughout the day this Monday, "the Pope was very loved and respected in the Canary Islands and we all thanked him at the time for the sensitivity he had with the Canarian people in the toughest months of caring for unaccompanied minors arriving on our coasts, when no one else had it. Such was his concern that he had expressed his desire to visit the islands in the coming months, a situation that unfortunately will not occur."
