The Minister of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families of the Government of the Canary Islands, Candelaria Delgado, announced this Wednesday that the regional Executive will request the State to reactivate asylum applications for humanitarian reasons for Venezuelan citizens remaining in the Canary Islands.

Delgado, in statements to the press, explained that with the entry into force of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum, asylum applications that were being processed were suspended, as well as the situation of some Venezuelan individuals already granted asylum in the Canary Islands.

The minister stated that the Government of the Canary Islands considers that the current situation prevents the return of these individuals to Venezuela, especially in the case of families with dependent minors, and stressed that the regional Executive must continue to ensure the best interests of minors.

Therefore, she announced that the Government of the Canary Islands is preparing a document to request the State to reactivate asylum applications for humanitarian reasons for Venezuelan citizens.

Likewise, she announced that the Canary Islands government is working on a package of aid for the next three months and indicated that, from her department, attention to Venezuelan families residing in the archipelago will be reinforced, especially to those who have lost a family member.

In this regard, she indicated that they are reviewing what type of support they can provide them.
