The Government of the Canary Islands and five airline and maritime companies have today signed a historic agreement to reduce the cost of travel for young people residing on the islands. The European Youth Card program in the Canary Islands, under the General Directorate of Youth of the Ministry of Social Welfare of the Government of the Canary Islands, and the IDEO Canary Islands Youth Foundation, has reached an alliance with some of the main airlines and shipping companies operating in the archipelago to improve mobility.

Iberia, Binter, Armas Trasmediterránea, Líneas Romero and Naviera Nortour will offer special discounts for people who hold the European Youth Card in the Canary Islands and who will be added to the 75% bonus already applied for residence.

As a result of this agreement, all affiliated companies will reduce the price of tickets by 10% for youth card users residing on the islands who identify themselves as such, which will facilitate transport and contribute to the territorial cohesion of the archipelago.

In the words of the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, this agreement will favor the travel of young people from the Canary Islands and is born with the aim of "guaranteeing that our young people, regardless of where they reside, have the same opportunities to access educational, labor, cultural and social resources."

"Through this multiple agreement, what is sought is the unity of the transport sector to offer special prices to the almost 50,000 users of the youth card in the Canary Islands, promoting competition and offering several options. In a fragmented space like the Canary Islands, mobility between islands is a daily reality and we work to promote it," he said.

The Minister of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families, Candelaria Delgado, thanked "the effort of all the transport companies that have joined this important historical pact, a common effort between the transport sector and the Government of the Canary Islands that aims to make the youth card more attractive."

Daniel Morales, General Director of Youth, remarked that "all the surveys we have point to this need for mobility on the part of young people in the Canary Islands, and we wanted to respond to it."

The discounts will be applied to young people between the ages of 12 and 30 who have the youth card. This card is free and can be obtained on the web.

It is expected that these discounts will be active before the end of the year, which will include national and international routes, on the respective websites of the airlines and shipping companies, always compatible with the residence discount.

The agreement is open to new incorporations of airline, maritime and land companies. The objective is to extend it at the beginning of next year and the General Directorate of Youth is already making arrangements in this regard.
