The Parliament of the Canary Islands has approved the name change of the Cabildo of Lanzarote to also include the island of La Graciosa. This is evident from the publication of Law 3/2026, of June 16, on island councils published this Monday in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands and signed by the Canarian president, Fernando Clavijo.
This resolution contemplates its integration into the Insular Administration of Lanzarote. In this way, although Caleta de Sebo is recognized as the capital of the island of La Graciosa, the insular administrative capital will also be that of its Cabildo, as is the case with the rest of the Lanzarote municipalities.
The name change will come into effect starting this Tuesday, the day after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands. At an administrative level, nothing currently changes on the island of La Graciosa, which will remain integrated within the municipality of Teguise, but after its autonomy is recognized, it will also be recognized in the denomination of the first insular corporation.
Absence of a delegated councilor in La Graciosa
For the moment, the plenary session of Teguise rejected the proposal by Nueva Canarias to recover the figure of the delegated councilor of the eighth island, a link between La Graciosa and the town hall. The initiative also sought the creation of a specific Department for the island, as a decentralized management measure and to oblige a councilor to travel daily to the eighth island.
