Felipe VI and his wife Queen Letizia will inaugurate the ministerial conference on digital economy of the OECD, which will take place from December 13 to 16 in Gran Canaria and in which the digital course for the coming years will be set, said this Wednesday the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres.

The conference will be held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, but there will also be events on other islands, said the president of the Canary Islands, who commented that the kings will also be next Tuesday in an event that will take place at the Pérez Galdós Theater.

The conference was planned before the pandemic, a time when the importance of telematics has become evident, and the fact that it is held in the Canary Islands is for Ángel Víctor Torres "very important because it places the archipelago at the forefront of the world".

"In the Canary Islands there is talent and companies that have shown that they are at the forefront," said Ángel Víctor Torres, who added that in the archipelago there are difficulties in terms of physical connectivity, but not virtual, since, he stressed, in the islands is "in the best place in the world", since there is talent and companies that have shown that they are at the forefront.

With this ministerial meeting on digital economy of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Canary Islands will be the world center of the digital economy, stressed Ángel Víctor Torres.

The president of the Canary Islands also stressed that this conference will be attended by more than a thousand people from 50 delegations from as many countries on five continents, and among them there will be more than 40 senior representatives (ministers and secretaries of state) from the countries that are part of the OECD (38), but also from others.

This meeting will discuss digitalization as an engine of the global economy, and also how digital transformation can help improve society, as well as digital policies that prioritize people, and harness artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

Ángel Víctor Torres recalled that so far three ministerial conferences have been held, which took place the first in 1998 in Ottawa (Canada), the second in 2008 in Seoul (North Korea) and the third in 2016 in Mexico.

The president of the Canary Islands stressed that the more than a thousand people who will attend this ministerial conference are not tourists, and commented that there will be representatives from countries such as Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia and the Dominican Republic.

Companies will also have representatives at this conference, and thus there will be members of Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Telefónica, among others, said the president of the Canary Islands.

The final declaration of this conference, said the president of the Canary Islands, will focus on digitalization, the rights of the digital age, connectivity and eliminating digital divides.

During those days there will be various forums and also a meeting of representatives of the autonomous communities with the Minister of Economy, Nadia Calviño.

Ángel Víctor Torres said that the geographical situation of the Canary Islands and its commitment to innovation makes it a perfect place to host this conference.
