Residents of Costa Teguise have reported to La Voz the unpleasant situation they have been experiencing for a long time due to the plague of cockroaches that the tourist town is suffering.
Tourists and residents have to face, especially in the hottest months, hundreds of cockroaches every time they go out. In a video sent by a resident to this media outlet, a large number of them can be seen on a wall in Pueblo Marinero.
Such is the quantity of these insects that on many occasions pedestrians have to dodge them when walking on sidewalks, walls, and restaurant areas. In fact, sometimes some people prefer not to sit on the terraces of establishments due to the presence of cockroaches.
Despite the residents' complaints, the Teguise City Council has not taken any measures in this regard, such as fumigation, to try to curb the increase of these insects.
In addition to being unpleasant, cockroaches are vectors of more than 40 species of pathogenic bacteria and can transmit viruses, protozoa, helminths, and fungi. Among the most common diseases they carry are Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Staphylococcus, and Pseudomonas, which can contaminate food and surfaces, causing intestinal infections, diarrhea, and gastroenteritis.
