The workers of the company KUO Seguridad assigned to the security service of the School of Art in Lanzarote have contacted La Voz to publicly denounce the situation of "absolute helplessness, vulnerability, and legal defenselessness" in which they find themselves since last August 1, due to "terrible business management and the lack of oversight by public administrations".
As will be recalled, this company is also responsible for the security of the Lanzarote Fishing School, which at the end of July informed its workers, about 1,300 throughout Spain, that they should not report to their posts from August 1 onwards.
The company KUO Seguridad, which has been in receivership since last June, "has abruptly abandoned the school's security service since August 1".
"Despite the urgency to cover the center's security, no other company in the sector can assume the service through an emergency contract," they assure. The reason is that KUO Seguridad "maintains a significant debt with Social Security, a legal block that administratively prevents the entry of a new operator and leaves the educational center unprotected," they say.
Currently, three security guards are without operational service. Although for the moment they are under paid leave, the reality is that they are awaiting the resolution of an Employment Regulation File (ERE) or a Temporary Employment Regulation File (ERTE). According to sector legislation, the new awarded company "should obligatorily take over our employment to maintain our jobs, but this process is completely frozen."
Furthermore, the workers express their discontent due to "labor intrusion" by hiring janitors instead of security guards. "To try to patch up the lack of security until the service is put out to public tender again, the proposed solution has been to hire janitors. We denounce that this measure violates professional competencies, as janitorial staff cannot legally exercise the specific security and protection functions that, by law, belong to qualified security guards," they indicate.
Likewise, they point out the "worrying lack of oversight and coordination between the administrations involved". As they explain, no official from the Ministry of Education periodically checks that the contracting companies are up to date with their workers' Social Security obligations, allowing situations to reach a critical point without prior intervention.
For their part, they assure that Social Security does not issue early warnings or effectively notify of the existence of accumulated debts by the company, causing employees to discover the situation when the damage is already irreparable.
"As usually happens in these scenarios of corporate and institutional negligence, the thread always breaks on the weakest side: the worker is the one who always ends up paying the price," they criticize.
"We request from the competent authorities and the Ministry an immediate solution that guarantees the real safety of the educational center and unblocks the labor situation of the three affected security guards, demanding strict compliance with the right to subrogation," they continue.
