A relative of a patient admitted to the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital denounces that people are smoking inside the healthcare center area despite current legislation prohibiting tobacco consumption in these spaces.
According to the relative, smokers are found in the hallways that open to the outside on the first and second floors, as well as at the entrance opposite the cafeteria. They also state that "the garden area is full of cigarette butts" and that this is not a recent occurrence, but has been happening for some time. Furthermore, the relative has expressed their incomprehension of the debate on the new anti-smoking bill that prohibits smoking in places like terraces and beaches, while in daily practice, they encounter tobacco smoke in the hospital.
The hospital does not have a designated area, and the healthcare center explains that smoking "is absolutely prohibited in any area of the hospital." They also state that it is monitored as much as possible, but sometimes it is the visitors themselves who smoke in these areas.
The WHO (World Health Organization) states that secondhand smoke also brings serious consequences, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as lung cancer and ischemic heart disease. It can also cause premature death for more than 1.6 million people annually.
Tobacco consumption in healthcare centers constitutes a direct violation of Article 7. c of Law 42/2010, of December 30, a regulation that prohibits smoking in all healthcare spaces, including all outdoor or covered spaces within their premises.
