Zonzamas Plus Car Lanzarote achieved a crucial victory this Sunday against Elda Prestigio (26-21) at the San Bartolomé Municipal Pavilion, in a direct duel for permanence corresponding to matchday 16 of the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola. In a spectacular atmosphere and with Teledeporte cameras as witnesses, the Lanzarote team put in a solid and mature performance to earn two golden points that allow them to regain confidence and remain very much alive in the fight for salvation.
The match started with a very switched-on Zonzamas, who struck first with a counter-attack from Marie Louis and a converted penalty to make it 2-0 in the 3rd minute. Elda took time to find the goal, and didn't manage to equalize until the 10th minute, also from seven meters (2-2). From then on, the pace dropped slightly and Juan J. Rivera called a timeout halfway through the first half to regain offensive continuity.
The match then entered a phase of constant exchange, with Gleinys Reyes leveling the score with a counter-attack in the 17th minute (5-5). Although Elda managed small leads, Zonzamas remained calm and, supported by a solid defense, managed to close the first half with two more counter-attacks from Marie Louis, who signed the 14-12 at halftime.
After the restart, the home team came out determined to break the game open. Two consecutive saves by Alicia Robles kept the team in the game, extending their lead to 16-12 in the 34th minute. Zonzamas found offensive solutions with greater fluidity, forcing the visiting coach to call a timeout in the 43rd minute with the score at 18-14.
Elda then opted for a seven-on-six attack, but the Batatera defense responded with immense force, punishing every turnover and scoring goals into an empty net. That solidity allowed Zonzamas to open a decisive gap (22-17, min. 50), which proved insurmountable for the Alicantinas.
