El Zonzamas Plus Car Lanzarote was on the verge of earning their first points of the season after falling by the narrowest of margins to Conservas Orbe Zendal Porriño (23-22), in a very evenly matched game with a strong defensive character in which the Lanzaroteñas even enjoyed a maximum lead of six goals.
The match began with great defensive intensity. The team coached by Sergio Hernández was solid at the back, hindering Porriño's offensive plays, while Alicia Robles began to be one of the visitors' main assets between the posts.
Maria Monllor scored to make it 1-2 in the 4th minute and Gleinys Reyes extended the lead from the seven-meter line to make it 2-4 in the 11th minute. The home team found it very difficult to break down the Lanzaroteña defense and, when they did, they were met with Robles' saves.
In the 13th minute, Zaliata Mlamali scored her first goal in the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola with a spectacular shot from the wing to make it 3-5. Zonzamas continued to take the initiative and Brenda Roger scored to make it 4-7 with a powerful shot from nine meters.
The home team sought solutions by attacking with seven players, but Zonzamas did not falter. Gleinys Reyes scored to make it 5-9 in the 21st minute, forcing Porriño to call a timeout. The visiting defense continued to perform at a high level, and in attack, Thalyta Cardoso and Maria Monllor found ways to overcome the Galician defensive setup.
Another goal from Monllor made the score 7-13 in the 25th minute, Zonzamas' largest lead. Porriño reacted in the final stretch of the first half and reduced the deficit to 11-14 at halftime.
After the break, the home team came out more focused and narrowed the gap to 13-14 in the 34th minute. Just a minute later, Maria Rodríguez tied the game at 14 with an outside shot.
Zonzamas then went seven minutes without scoring, while exclusions and turnovers hampered their offensive continuity. Porriño took advantage of the situation to complete a 5-1 run and take the lead for the first time, with a score of 16-15 in the 42nd minute.
Alicia Robles kept the team in the game with several notable saves, although the second half became a tough period for both teams, with less fluid attacks and difficulty in finding clear shots.
El Porriño extended their lead to 21-17 in the 50th minute, but Zonzamas reacted in the decisive stretch. Claudia Kaulback, Marilia Correia, and Maria Monllor led the visiting comeback, which reduced the difference to 22-21 in the 53rd minute. Shortly after, Gleinys Reyes tied the game at 22.
In the final minutes, Zonzamas opted for a seven-player attack to try to complete the comeback, although they had difficulty overcoming the home defense. El Porriño managed to take the lead again and, in the last play, Zonzamas scored on a counter-attack, but the goal was deemed out of time by the officiating team.
The match ended with a tight 23-22 victory for the Galician team. Zonzamas put up a good performance for a large part of the match, especially in defense, although they were left without the reward of points after a second half in which El Porriño managed to turn the score around.
