Lanzarote experienced a day dedicated to open water swimming this Saturday with the celebration of the XIV EMMAX Playa Honda Swim Crossing, an event that once again filled the coast of the municipality of San Bartolomé with sport and atmosphere. From early in the morning, a great expectation was already felt around Playa Honda avenue, with swimmers, families, and fans ready to enjoy an intense morning of competition.
The first protagonists were the participants of the 4 kilometers, the longest distance challenge of the program and a category that had sold out several days before the event. Swimmers from the Canary Islands Cup and numerous athletes ready to face the challenge prepared to cover the route that connected Arrecife with Playa Honda.
After 10:30 AM, the first strokes of a crossing that was not easy began. The presence of current and medium waves increased the level of difficulty and forced participants to give their all for a good part of the route. The reward was at Playa del Curita, where the finish line was set up and where family, friends, and the public welcomed each and every one of the swimmers with applause.
In the non-wetsuit category, which counted towards the Canary Islands Open Water Cup, Unai Cocera Cordón was the male winner with a time of 54:24, followed by Daniel Lechuga Lago, with 56:18, and Althay González Ferrera, with 57:55. Among the women, the victory went to Sheila Pulido Mayor, who completed the four kilometers in 58:46. Just 19 seconds later, Marta Armas Roca reached the finish line (59:05), while Sandra Nieves Medina completed the podium with 1:04:03.
The event also had a classification for participants who used wetsuits. Raúl Fernández Ruiz (55:45) and Silvia Gopar Bonilla (1:03:31) were the male and female winners, respectively.
After the arrival of the 4-kilometer participants, all the action was concentrated at Playa del Curita. It was the turn of the 1,200, 800, and 400-meter distances, which counted towards the Lanzarote Open Water Cup, turning the permanent circuit of Playa Honda, the only one of its kind on the island, into the scene of a true swimming festival.
In the 1,200 meters, Besay Delgado Hernández won in the men's category with 17:59, accompanied on the podium by Nicolás Padrón Miguelez (18:07) and Knut Anderssen Miranda (18:09). In women's, Natalia Emilia Sasu Bodarnea achieved victory with 18:53, ahead of Catalina Rodríguez Regueira (19:17) and Lily Gopar Cordoves (19:58).
The youngest also had their space. In the 800 meters alevín, Lois Chantada Manso won in the men's category with 17:05, while Nahia Escudero García achieved the women's victory with 17:14. In the 400 meters benjamín, Alexander Delgado Hernández achieved the men's triumph with 8:59 and Laia Inés López Celaye was the women's winner with 10:22. One of the most special moments arrived again with the inclusive modality. Its participants became true protagonists of the morning, offering all those present an example of overcoming, effort, and sportsmanship. The applause and recognition received upon their arrival reflected one of the main values that the EMMAX Playa Honda Crossing wants to convey: that open water and sport should be a space for everyone.
The competition closed with the 3x200 meter relays, a modality outside the official cups that brought intensity, camaraderie, and fun to the end of the program. The teams were composed of three members, with the obligation to include at least one girl, and each relay runner had to complete 200 meters. Los Delgasasu were the fastest, with a time of 7:37, followed by Los Suris (8:09) and Cloros Apiens (8:11).
After all the activity developed in the sea, the participants were able to regain strength with the refreshment prepared by the organization before the trophy presentation. The event was attended by the councilors of the San Bartolomé City Council, Alexis Hernández and Mamadou Yero, putting the finishing touch to a day marked by sport, hugs, smiles, and the atmosphere experienced in Playa Honda.
The XIV EMMAX Playa Honda Swimming Crossing thus closed a new edition with an eye already on next year and with the objective of continuing to consolidate itself as one of the great events of open water swimming in Lanzarote.
